you can sometimes get 50 points just for putting the letter X down. This is because of the great two letter words you can make with X, and often you can put the X on a triple letter square and make two words

I think the most useful words are the ones that'll get rid of your Q when you don't have a U, such as QAT, QAID, QANAT, QINDAR, and QINTAR. There are more, but those will save your bacon late in the game if you're sitting on that Q.
