they are perfectly safe, ultrasounds of any kind use sound waves to make the pictures - like sonar on submarines or bats! the sound waves are emitted through the mums skin and womb, they continue to pass harmlessly through the fluid in the womb but are reflected back by the baby, thats how you get the picture, sound waves arent dangerous to mum or baby, and Adrienne sound waves arent a form of radiation, they are the repeated compression and expansion of particles (usually the air but in this case bodily tissues - radiation travels through space but sound can't as there is no air to travel through - no one can hear you scream in space!).
to get a 3d image the process is repeated from different angles to build up a solid image, and for 4d the movements over time are recorded so you can see a film of your baby moving in the womb.
ultrasound scans are carried out on a regular basis all over the world, this wouldnt happen if they were unsafe.
if you want one and can afford one then go ahead.
good luck with the pregnancy and little one.

ps. you have a better chance of finding out the sex with 3d and 4d scans as they are more indepth.

I recently had my 4D ultrasound and am safe in the knowledge that my son is fine. He's still kicking and moving around like crazy! As with most products, the 4D ultrasound is not dangerous when being used by the right person. It is recommended that the ultrasound be conducted for no longer than 15-20 minutes at a time. There are certain places where the U/S are done for novelty purposes and there have been reports of a technician using them for over an hour in ordre to get a good, clear image! Common sense tells everyone this isn't good. Your doctor would not do something to harm your child, so try not to worry too much about it. And if you can't help but worry, have your OB/GYN explain the pros and cons to you.

I've heard they are dangerous too. I've also heard that the regular 2D ultrasounds are dangerous, but the 4D's are more dangerous. Unfortunately, I've nothing to back it up...except for the fact that it is a form of radiation...radiation of very high-pitched sound.
My daughter *hated* ultrasounds, alwas moved as far away from the wand as possible.

no there is no way they are dangerous ,they are the same as routine scans. i had one myself it is a magical experience to see you baby in form before it is born. enjoy !when 4d scans are performed the doctor checks for a number of illnesses ,checks the blood flow from the placenta, the baby,s heart rate, the amniotic fluid amount. most benificial and assuring.

No, they are not dangerous. They use the same waves of sound as the regular 2-D ultrasound.

not that I have heard. I do know that the results can lead to a decision not to have an amnio which can cause harm to the fetus.
Good luck, I hope all goes well.
