My daughter never got herself out of it, but she didn't really try to escape either. Once she was old enough to wiggle around in it I made sure to leave it on the floor and keep on eye on her whenever she was in it. It was the same with every other baby product out there though- I wouldn't leave her unattended in her bouncy seat or swing especially once she was more mobile.
That being said, in my opinion the bumbo seat is awesome! I used it until my daughter was two years old, not a lot after she learned to sit up on her own, but it was great to keep her in place to do her hair, etc. They even make a tray for it now which was my biggest complaint about it before. It was hard for baby to reach toys if she dropped them.

The bumbo seat is intended for children around 3 months who only need minimal support to sit up. Although it is really hard for a child to fall out of the bumbo, it is possible. That is why you should always keep an eye on them. Once a child is able to crawl this seat is pretty much bad news, unless you are keeping it on the floor. This way if they do fall out, they don't have much room to fall.
