That the Earth is round was universally known in western society at the time of Columbus. It had been figured out in ancient Greek times (it is not difficult to figure out), maybe as early as the 6th century BC and certainly by the 3rd century BC. This fact was never lost or forgotten even during the Middle Ages. The story that people in the Middle Ages thought the Earth was flat was made up in the 19th century.

Eratosthenes (Greek, 276-194 BC) declared the earth was round and was the first person to estimate its circumference, and his answer was about half of the actual size. Do google search on "Greek earth science."
