Atomic element(s) &/or molecular compound(s) float from
these things into the air which you breathe. Your receptoring &/or sensory biocells will be stimulated by these incoming particles from the air & transmit electrical impulses into your motoring neuronic cells. These electrical impulses will be be forwarded to your brain cells eventually & you'll come to your senses.

Smells, like any other sense, are ultimately caused by some electrical signal sent to the brain, which the brain interprets. For smells, the signal comes from the nose, from an organ called olfactory bulbs. In these olfactory bulbs, there are a bunch of sensors of specific shapes, kind of like that old game 'Perfection'. When a molecule comes along that has the right shape to fit into a sensor, the nose sends a message to the brain corresponding to a certain smell. Of course, if something doesn't fit any of the sensors in your nose, it won't have a smell at all.

Molecules of the stuff float through the air and stick to the inside of your nose, which has molecules that interlock with the smell molecules. When that happens a neuron fires to your brain and you recognize a smell.

And yeah - that means when someone farts ... but it's just a tiny molecule.
