Snowing does not cause the warmth, the relative warmth causes the snow. During very cold weather the capacity of the air to contain moisture is greatly reduced. What water vapor remains is deposited as frost. At the same time, evaporation is reduced and therefore air humidity remains low. In these conditions snow cannot form. Warmer air can hold more moisture before saturation point is reached and the water vapor begins to condense out. So when warmer air moves into cooler areas, not only do we feel the increase in temperature, but the excess vapor precipitates as snow.

This question can have many answers to it, largely depending on the front (warm or cold) or other forcing mechanism that creates the snow. The most obvious one to me is when snow is created in advance of a warm front-warm being relative, temperatures could still be at or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit behind a warm front. After the snow falls and the front moves through-these events normally occur within hours of each other-"warmer" air moves in, causing the temperature to rise.

Snow is also a very good insulator. What this means, is as the snow begins to lay on the ground, it prevents the earth from cooling itself by radiating heat into the atmosphere. Think about how the earth cools overnight. There is no sun to warm the surface as the surface continues to emit radiation, causing the surface of the earth to cool the fastest. Snow essentially cuts off the surface, acting like a sweater you'd wear on a cold winter day.

On the flip side of that, the snow also reflects a large amount of sunlight when the sun finally does come back out, keeping the earth from warming as it would when there is no snow. So snow acts to both as a means of warming and cooling.

Many other factors go into this heating/cooling of the Earth, but these are a few of the major ones to understand.

I think alot of these answers are great. The clouds are warming it up so the heat is not escaping the earth. Have you noticed how freaking cold it is on a clear night. Especially when the moon is visible. I hate it like that. I will take clouds until Spring arrives.

because before there where no clouds so ot was colder, with cl;ouds it is warmer because the warmth is reflected by the clouds back to the earth
