Well joining the national guard is not 100% sure he will not be sent to Iraq. DO NOT make this your criteria. But if that is your case join the Air Force guard unit. But then it may depend on what is close by.

Join the guard and get a MOS (Method Of Service, or what kind of job he wants to do in the guard) that will be beneficial to him in the civilian world. If he has a regular job, he may want to be a Military Police which would help him if he decided to put in an application for the local police department

The time in boot camp and advance boot camp will depend on the MOS he selects. They are all different. Infantry boot camp may be a total of 3 months, whereas if he goes to an electronic school, he may spend 6 months. It all depends. The basic boot camp is the same time. This is to acquaint him with the basics of his service. Then the advanced training has different lengths of time as to what his job is to learn.

Benefits.

1. He gets a two week vacation from his wife every year. LOL Normally, they go for two week training playing soldier and getting full, regular service pay for that period.

2. Attends a weekend of training each month. Gets paid for that.

3. If he is called, he is GUARANTEED his job upon returning.

4. If he has a federal job, the guard time will count for credits toward retiring.

5. Possible to get some educational benefits from it.

6. You can talk S**t to your friends that your husband is serving his country and doing his duty. You do not tell them of course that you objected to his serving.

7. Your husband can get some personal pride that he is one of thousands that are defending our way of life against A ssholes like Osama bin Laden and screwed up terroists. Also take pride when he is called up by the Governor to help in state emergencies like a tornado or flooding.

My personal opinion now. After 9/11, what do you think would have happened if Iraq would not have been invaded. Osama bin Laden would have been planning another attack knowing that the USA would not do anything about it. If you read your history, what would have happened if we would not have had a Pearl Harbor. American did not want to get involved. But if you want freedom which you take for granted you must be willing to die for it if someone takes it away. Americans have grown lax and want others to die for them. I understand that you do not want to lose your husband to war. But then you are not the first wife to do so. If you lived in a country like Iran, where you would have no rights, then only then would you appreciate what the USA means to you. But we are spoiled. I am a disable vet so I know what I am saying. But then that is what is great about this great country. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT, not to serve and let other great people die for you so you can have your freedom. Only in America.

Why don't you look in the phone book for a recruiter and they can answer your questions.
