I have all the cisco books, but do i need pay to atttend classes at an accredited centre, can I not just read the books and then when I am ready pay to take the exam.

NO, you don't need to attend classes to take the certification exams, but it definitely does help. Why? Because you're actually working with the networking stuff (hooking them up, configuring them, etc.), and have the benefits of working with an instructor "in the know." And often, they provide some hints or tips for the exam.

But you could also do self-study or take a prep class. Either way, so long as you pay the fee, you can take the test.
