Money and power are the motivating factors when it comes to world affairs. We only get involved any time there is something to gain. Places around the world that nobody is thinking about does not have any US involvement at all.

In 53 years I have never heard the USA refereed to as the "mother country". And we do not come to every ones rescue. There are a lot of people up set that we haven't sent troops to the Dufar region of the Sudan for one example. Yes we have sent financial and humanitarian aid however.
Iraq and Afghanistan; yes we are involved. And let's try to remember that our agreement with the governments of both countries includes that if they request we leave...we leave. We don't own their countries. But for some reason I haven't read anywhere that they have asked us to leave.
You say we are involved in "everything". Anything more specific?

Unfortunately, it's not really the "mother country" so much as the "big brother" country, including many of the 1984 implications of that term. But there is still a basic generosity of spirit in Americans that cannot stand to see injustice prevail anywhere in the world. Try as we might, a completely hands-off approach does not work for us.
But a more restrained approach of diplomacy, the economic prosperity of a free market, and a generous attitude toward our most important export -- information -- should work better than this emphasis on military solutions we see so much of currently. Yes, they will tell you they tried the peaceable free market approach. I say keep trying.
Eventually people get wise to the fact that when they shoot, they are shooting potential suppliers and customers, and making commerce is way better than making war.

we aren't the mother country. i think that's what russia called itself. but i think we get into people's business because for the most part, we were founded on certain beliefs and we think everyone should have them. and being that we are the most powerful, we are the ones who can help. also, we signed the human rights treaty thing...whatever it's proper name, i can't remember...so we are kind of bound to protect human rights as much as we can (or in some people's translations, as long as it benefits us!)
and when you are the biggest and richest, and you have the ability to help...it just so happens that your good deeds go unnoticed, and all the tiny mistakes you make are highlighted, and when you don't help people gripe and moan about it, and if you help to much they cry about that too. it's lonely at the top of the mountain.
with that same thought in mind, we may be at the top, but we are human, we make mistakes. but when you're on top, no one wants to see you make mistakes, and they really want to make you pay for it when you do.

The last half of your question was right. We involve ourselfs in things that aren't our business. But if you want to run a global economic and military empire that's what you have to do.

Maybe the US used to screw with other nations, but we help a whole lot of nations, too, especially today. Generosity is good.
Sometimes we have to be the policeman of the world. Thank God. Who else is gonna do it? Do you have any idea how rotten the United Nations has become?
