Indeed we are. Despite having a more liberal contitution than some first world countries, gay marriages have alos recently been legalised. This is no way mean that you can walk hand in hand anywhere in the country with your same sex partner. In major cities and urban areas same sex couples barely get a second glance. In the rural areas and "townships" however, it is a different story. There has been some serious debate within african cultural circles regarding the cultural origin of homosexuality and some black africans might argue that it is a western and european influence. Overall there are no more bigots in South Africa than in any other coutry like the USA or Europe. Probably the most gay friendly cities in South Africa is Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Listen to gay South Africans. Yes South Africa in the books is very open, but that place is not safe haven.
The advocate had stories of a lesbian who was raped in order to made feel like a 'real woman.'
So I'm sure it can be a wonderful place, but be careful that you take all precautions you would take in any other nation. Don't go down any dark streets or unfriendly places. Some people in the interviews said that it was a great place, but they didn't want to give their names and were having fun in GAY places. So it's possible =D just like any other place you will find people who don't approve.
Compared to other African countries South Africa is amazing =D you won't get deported or sent to jail, just because you are gay and they ban discrimination based on SEXUAL ORIENTATION in their constitution, the only country in the world that does that =D.
It's awesome by law, and no other compares in the region.

Despite our constitution, I'd have to say no, not generally. Stay in the cities and you should be okay, but the South African country-side is still VERY conservative.
That said, South Africa is changing VERY fast in all aspects of tolerance, and I'd say that, esepcially amongst kids and young adults up to about 35, you'll have no problems being accepted.

Actually & surprisingly, South Africa is very gay/lesbian friendly. The women are very open & expressive sexually & homosexuality is not looked down upon & criticized as it is in other places.

Sure it is. Why wouldn't it be?
Do you honestly believe that a location is going to actually stop people from being who they are?
Each day, I read in the newspaper of people crossing that boundary of oppression and outing themself in the name of FREEDOM.
They are becoming more and more accepted - EVERYWHERE.
Think about it - do you not agree ?
Thanks for the question,
