I'd start with what Kathleen said. I'd go to college to get a degree in some type of animal science, with a specilalization in behavior if you can. Your best bet to getting a good job in the field is to apprentice with a trainer and/or behaviorist you really like.

http://www.iaabc.org/ You can use that website to help you find a behaviorist.

http://www.iiacab.com/ This group has a lot of information on behaviorists.

http://www.apdt.com/ Check here for certified trainers.

http://www.ccpdt.org/ This organization certifies dog trainers.

I'd also read as many books about canine behavior as you can get your hands on. I like Trish King, Patricia McConnell, Jean Donaldson, and Ian Dunbar. They also teach seminars and telecourses. You can find some of that info here: http://www.4pawsu.com/seminars.htm

I went to school to learn. The school I went to is no longer in existence. It was here in New Mexico and was called Aztec School of Canine Training. We specialized on learning about aggression cause the school trained Police Dogs as well as the ordinary canine. Everything from basic obedience to a fully trained dog.

A canine is a canine and we studied wolf behavior to learn about the basic instinct of pack living. The dogs we have today do have basic instinct as the wolf but humans have modified the behavior of the domestic dog so that it can live with humans. The dog of today is a member of the family(pack) and act out their part of the pack.

Right now I could not tell you were to go to go to school but it is well worth any effort you put into learning. I have used my knowledge to help my clients deal with their pets and have added my insight to help people here on this site.

I do hope that you are able to find a school and learn all you can cause I have found that my knowledge has helped a lot of people.
I am also a Pet Groomer and I specialize in behavior problems. Part of my knowledge was a God given gift cause I can even approach wild animals.

I am so grateful for the knowledge I have and that I can share my knowledge here. I just get tired of some of the same questions being ask over and over again & the stupidity of some of the questions.

You need to take classes through places such as Penn Foster University, or a local college or animal related organization.

Many groups offer certification in areas such as Dog Training, etc.

I would also try working in the industry, volunteer at a shelter, work at a dog day care, or assist in a Vet's office. Many dog day cares offer alternative training and certification through organizations such as the SPCA, or ABKA. The internet is also a great place to search for online classes.

Inquire at your local university that offers veterinary studies.
