Over 50% of women are now not getting married for the first time. A few years ago, children born outside wedlock exceeded 50%. Are we headed toward a marriage free society, in which men and women are no longer interested in that type of commitment? How will this affect any children having access to their fathers? Only two states, California and Arizona have any laws with a presumption that single fathers have any rights to their children. All are presumed to have a financial obligation, but nothing more. Is this in any way related to the growing difference between the number of women and the number of living and breathing men?

According to the most recent stats, you are correct sir! It is a society out of control that is going down this path. We can look back over many years and see this pattern evolving to where it is now, however, look at this board it appears that women are fed up with the way men are acting now days.

Recent posting of questions like:
He stays out drinking what should I do?
He refuses to spend time with the kids?
What do I have to do to keep him?
Are all signs that nothing is changing.
So I would have to answer you that YES we are heading to a society where Marriage is an exception.
Great deep thinking question though.

Marriage isn't the exception, it's the latest craze! These days everybody is getting married, knowing that if they get bored in a couple of years they can ALWAYS get divorced! Hollywood is filled with examples of how you can get married, have fun, and then call it quits when you get bored. That's why it's hard for my 33 year old best friend to find decent women in Southern CA. Because 9 out of 10 are either divorced, divorced with kids, or have kids and have never been married. So to answer your question, marriage will never be the exception instead of the rule. Not when society has decided that marriage is no longer a lifelong commitment, but a 2-5 year arrangement.

I find this interesting myself. I also understand that people are waiting a lot longer to get married. I know people who simply feel the paper is not necessary and if you want a divorce it is so expensive, and the judge often makes the decisions for you even if you agree on things. Quite personally i don't need a man in my life.. lol! I'd love to have one, but i can make it on my own and will wait it out for the right one this time around. I do feel a lot of the younger generation is trying to be more wise when choosing a mate. So many people marry just to have a companion. That doesn't work for me. It has to be a healthy relationship with someone you respect and admire.

I think that to many people are having children out of wedlock and it's over lapping marriage. I agree with you on that. People think that if they live together and not get married then what's the different. The sad thing is the children involved. They didnt' ask to be brought into that kind of life and they are the ones who get hurt.
