these cars are bad about the ignition coils. pull the plug wires off one at a time. if the sound of the engine dosent change when you unplug a wire that cylinder is misfiring. if there are two cylinders misfiring either 1 and 4, or 2 and 3 the most likely cause is a coil. these coils are on the back of the engine and can be a pain to get to.

if it goes to about 3000rpms and won't shift out of 2nd it's the catilytic converter. Should sound real muffled and get warmed up really quick. Otherwise, you most likely have a trans problem, i.e. shift solenoid is stuck on.

Catalitic converter mabe plugged,fuel filter needs replacing.
