why are smilies yellow?

i know itsa a stupid question...but today i just thought of it...

When they first appeared in the 70's they chose a color that would stand out on almost any background (T-Shirt color).

They wisely opted for yellow.
Also ... it identifies with the Sun as in a Happy Sunny Day !
