I thought the other way around. Why do people say Orientals instead of Asian. Japanese,Korean or Chinese are East Asian.
Indonesian, Malysian,Vietnamese, Thai are Southeast Asian.
Indian are South Asian. Kyrgystan (that used to part of USSR) people look Asian too me and the country is actually located in Central Asia

I need to do some research, but I thought that the term oriental had been deemed politically incorrect? Not entirely sure. I think Eastern Asians would be more appropriate though. It would be great if you could get some feedback from a person of Chinese, Japanese, or other asian descent to add their two cents on the subject.

It's just a convient way to classify people. Meanings change over time and may differ depending on where you live. In Brazil, the majority of the people are of Portuguese descent; and are referred to as "White" even though many don't have pale skin that is associated with whites. Oriental onced refered to people of Middle Eastern descent. Native Americans were misnamed as Indians for a long because Colombus was convinced he sailed to India when he landed in the New World.

I dont like to say Orientals. I call all people of oriental descent, Japanese or Chinese...sometimes Korean. There is no other difference to me really. Japanese have a very distinct look. They do not look like Chinese or Koreans or the other 'asian' races.
I seriously believe that it's easier to say Asian instead of OR-I-ENT-ALS. AS-IAN, just rolls easier off the tongue.
BUT - I can tell you that most Asians are pretty great people.
Why are Asians so polite, and respectful, and well....just so darn wonderful?
Geesh. I guess Muslims would be the TOTAL opposite of Asians. You think THOSE two would be at war with each other eh?

I prefer to call them Oriental. But the word Orient and the word Asia both mean the same thing: the east.
People should invent a new word to describe Chinese-looking people.

Its just a way to classify. most Asians have the same basic look to them.
But in the UK, Asians ARE called Oriental...which is named for the ORIENT which also IS NOT a race but a LOCATION!!!
If they ain't complaining neither am I!!!! Is it really that bothersome.
