No, it was a fictional movie made to look like a documentary. Read more at the websites below:

It's 100% fake. Even the legend the Blair Witch was a fictional story, cobbled-together from some supposedly real events (the Bell Witch), a little history (the Salem Witch Trials), and some folklore.

Interestingly, the movie didn't really have a script. Each morning the cast members received notes telling them what their characters' thoughts and motivations were supposed to be for that day... and they improvised.

No it is not real footage. The "actors" appeared to present an award on the MTV movie awards after the movie was released. Another tipoff that it was not real footage, 3 days in the woods and the girl's makeup was still okay, and nobody had dirt on their hands or fingernails?

Hello,
NO! To my belief it was a group of school kids with a school project. They made the movie on a budget of $8,000.00 limit.
As a joke it was submitted into the movies.
It was never to have ever imagined to be such a hit at the movie box.

PS. Almost the same take off like the show South Park.

From what I read about the making of the movie no it's not real.
Besides it's just plain stupid. When you go hiking or camping the first thing you do is stop at the local ranger station and let them know where you are going and when you expect to return.

No. It's entirely fake. The fact that it seems true is part of its charm, and why it's so creepy. They did a really good job and the rumor mill helped, but it is fake and the makers of the movie don't even try to pretend it's not.
