Video games enable addicts to escape the reality for their own life as the try to create a new life for themselves in the game. This leads to them isolating themselves from friends and family and ultimately shutting down.
I think it usually starts as entertainment and eventually they realize that they get more satisfaction, respect or grandeur than they do in the "real world" (if there is any such thing) .

I can answer why on-line anything can be addictive. Think about it: whatever you have always enjoyed doing, but maybe didn't do very often because it was not convenient, is now right here at your fingertips in a corner of your room. Anytime you want it, and most of it for free.

It's easy to see that the stimulation of the brain involved fosters addiction. Suddenly, all the awkward aspects of whatever you enjoy have been made easy and quick, and you can bookmark the page!

So, if you like role playing games, you gonna love making them easy to play. And remember that role playing games within the physical world are now old enough to be parents and grandparents sharing with their kids. Their kids are therefore familiar with the vocabulary and style, and take to the computerized versions as quickly as they can. They can beat their parents and even grandparents, who are slower because older, and who learned on the game board around the table, in naturally slower reaction times. And because they are sharing it with their parents and grandparents, they are permitted more time with it than kids who did not grow up on it, and become miniature experts.

That, after all, is what much of role-playing games is about: becoming sufficiently expert at the game to play well and win often, and enjoy teaching the newbies how to play.

Which is also what any game or hobby is about, isn't it?
