There are some really good scratch removing kits out there (I buy mine at Target) that remove even the deepest scratches and will still let them play. They cost about $15-20. I always buy the Maxell brand. Be sure to read the instructions first, though. You can misuse the product.

Yes, there are ways to buff out the scratches, though just how well any method will work depends on just how bad it is.
You can purchase kits meant for this, or you can try one of the home remedies like toothpaste or Turtle Wax car polish (never heard the peanut butter one before now, but why not?). Do a google on for it, you'll find lots of help.

Get a DVD Repair Kit from any supercenter. Since you have kids you can also buy a DVD copying software to make a personal copy of the original DVD.

I haven't tried this on dvds, but I have fixed many cd's with this method. Get peanut butter (creamy) and put it on the scratches, then take a coffee filter to wipe off the peanut butter, gently rub the peanut completely off with the coffee filter. My cd's always work fine after I do this. Let me know if it works on your dvds. Good luck!

some stores sell DVD cleaners which can help take care of scratched DVDs, sometimes just to wash them with with dish soap sometimes helps..
