I was just watching the news and it struck me that there aren't any overweight newscasters or weather people. It caught my attention because they were doing a report on dieting, and the 100 pound waif of a female newscaster said she was gonna have to try that particular diet.

There aren't many, they are nearly all like sticks unfortunately. There are one or two on UK TV, BBC Breakfast's Declan Curry springs to mind - he is on the chubby side, but rather sweet.
A reporter/presenter on BBC Wales, Melanie Doel, is on the hefty side, but I still think attractive. She is an excellent local reporter.
I suspect that it's even worse in the US, which is rather weird with the high number of obese people.

I was actually in broadcasting for a little while. Mostly radio, but one instructor I had at the school I attended, told one girl that she was too ugly to be a news anchor. Yeah, it hurt her feelings and it was a rude remark, but that is the type of people they want on thier newscasts. They say it attracts more viewers to have them be skinny and somewhat attractive.

This maybe mean but people need to see the weather board, so people that are smaller are usually used. But I have seen an overweight person do the weather before.

we had one on one of our local stations, he did the weather. He was pretty hefty, and I swear he must have had bypass surgery or a tapeworm or something because like 3 months later he was on and he looked like he lost about 90 pounds. Another station of ours has some slightly chunky field reporters. I know what you mean though. The station I like to watch has a knack for dressing the anchorwomen like hookers and putting too much makeup on them.

But they are a lot of old newscasters, though! Because after a certain time the network just can't fire them any more :p
