All approaches in the sciences use mathematical modeling. Newton's calculus is mathematical model for gravitation effects.
Einstein's model is better and could make predictions which Newton's couldn't (as well).

Other part - modelling is much cheaper than carrying out physical experiments in many cases, and in many cases only modeling is possible -- black holes for example

mathematical modelling is done to understand the thing that is modelled.

Once the model is there it is used to predict behaviour that is not seen yet in real world. If this behaviour occurs the model gets stronger, if not the model needs to be adapted.

For instance a math mode;l of gravity is newtons law
F = m a.

With this you can predict what will happen if some mass falls.

You see math models are not always difficult or magic
