I am thinking about traveling to africa for vacation in a couple of years. I am really interested in sub-saharan african.
My budget is limited but i would like to see as much as possible, both rural and cosmopolitan.
I was doing some brief research and Cape Town South African sounded great, what do you think?

Go to Somalia. You'll be able to find lots of people willing to drag you and your family around to all the sites.

I would recommend going to Namibia (It is cheaper and safer than South Africa), there are great opportunities to see some of the indigenous people, the big five (Etosha) and also some German influences (I recommend Luderitz and Swakopmund...) The desert is absolutely amazing... only place where I have had a major spiritual experience. I can also recommend Egypt... one of the best holidays I have EVER had (www.eastmar-travel.com) that is even cheaper than going to Namibia... you basically take a 5 star cruise down the Nile... excursions and 3 meals included. We went to Cairo for a day tour of the pyramids and Giza... EXCELLENT!

South Africa is nice and there is a lot to see... but it is kind of like playing Russian roulette at the moment... you can have a wonderful time and everything would be great or you could be mugged or worse... that's just how it is... unfortunately. South Africa is also not the place to go if you want to see the "real" Africa... it is very different from say, Ghana...

I would recommend Tanzania, where you can spend a few days in Serengeti national park, or Ngorongoro Cretor, visiting Kilimanjaro mountain, the highest mountain in Africa and the highest standing alone mountain in the World, and end up in Zanzibar, the spicy island, whre the sandy beaches are clean and exclissive! Try it, you will never forget it.

I would recommend Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, or Madagascar.

Another great place is Banjul, Gambia, and Equatorial Guinea.
