I can see the need for housing but....
I don't understand why someone would intentionally build around or on a volcano
History tells us better
Pompeii--Mt St. Hellens just to name a couple

any insight??

For the same reason they build and rebuild in New Orleans or the Netherlands. Probably some sort of death wish. ;-)?

Because volcanic soil is among the most fertile there is. People don't always know that a volcano isn't just another mountain. So mistakes are made.

Why do people build houses in flood planes? Why do people build houses in hurricane prone areas, you know they will have to rebuild like every 5 years?

Sure beats the heck out of being shot to death and slowly dying in a street somewhere in Wichita, Kansas.

For agricultural purposes and sometimes, people just don't have another choice. The view is great though.
