I guess working for the same gender as yourself will always have it's tense moments but then you get those groups at work that always seem to flock together no matter what department they work for. So its really up to yourself as a person to make relationships work out, especially with your boss.

I'm a female.
I've had good female and male bosses, but I liked the men the best because it seems like the female bosses had to be tough to get where they are and they jump on the chance to assume that you're "weak" if they would have done something better or differently.
Male bosses seem to be more chill and easy going. And, let's face it, males always love the females, no matter the situation.

I am a male and I have been working for over 20 years. I have had great bosses, both male and female, and crappy bosses, both male and female. But, overall, my worst bosses have both been female (although my last male boss was right up there).
I believe that these particular women felt that they needed to be super aggressive to get ahead in their careers. They felt that they had to work harder and be more demanding than their male counterparts. All this led to was high unhappy employees and high turnover (although for some unknown reason, this was never seen a a slight on the boss! Typical)

I am female and used to work in an all female workplace. All three of my bosses were female also. I HATED it. I do believe it was worse than being back in high school. So much fighting and back stabbing. I am so glad to be gone. If I ever decide to work outside of the home again I will make sure the boss is a man. I won't have to worry about his PMS and mood swings.

I'm female and I've worked for both over the years. Men tend to form cliques with male sub-ordinates that exclude the women. Women managers tend to talk family crap and automatically exclude the men.
This has changed quite a bit in the past 10 years. I've managed both males and females. Several times I've managed all male groups. I'm in engineering.
I had one male boss who threw furniture. I had a female boss who just took tantrums.

I'm a woman and I like female bosses. They tend to be more understanding and treat you more like a person than just a machine to do a task. As long as they can maintain that and are competent enough to keep order, I like them better.
::edit:: To add to what the person above me said, I have also worked in an all-female environment. I also hated it. But that is completely different than when you're in a more "normal" environment with a more equal divide between the sexes.

I am female. I have never been a boss. I have had both male and female supervisors. To me there was no difference. I preferred bosses who directly tell you what is needed, what you did wrong, etc. I am very direct and don't play games.
