Columbus was looking for a passage to far eastern countries such as India, believing that if he sailed straight west long enough he would eventually reach India. He was partially right, but what he didn't know was that there were a number of chunks of land between Spain and the far east going that way.
Unable to gain support from others - such as his native Italy, Columbus went to the Spanish court. Queen Isabella and her husband King Ferdinand paid for his voyage. He landed in what today is known as San Salvador.

Columbus wanted to reach the far East, to bring spices and other commodities, by going round the other side of the globe instead through land where there where too many wars and hazards. What he did not know was that the circumference of the world was far wider then he believed.
He appealed to his native land Portugal but was rejected so he went to the king and Queen of Spain.
He landed in Hispaniola (What today is believed to be San Salvador)
Columbus thought that he really had reached China or at least nearby islands which would eventually reach him to India. that is why we still call the native Americans 'Indians' and the prickly pear Indian Fig

Santo Domingo may be the capital of the Dominican Republic and the oldest European city in the Americas and in the event that you want to see one of the UNESCO World Heritage List then, that hotelbye is the place. Santo Domingo is just a university of countries and neighborhoods. It's where the looks of living, domino pieces slapped on platforms, backfiring mufflers and horns from chaotic traffic. In the center of the town is the Zona Colonial, where you will find among the oldest churches and the oldest surviving European. Also, in the Zona Colonial you will discover Gazcue, one of the city's oldest neighborhoods, filled with previous Victorian houses and tree-lined streets.
