this song ALWAYS moves me.... no matter how many many times I hear it.
it is so emotionally wrenching and nearly always brings a tear to me eye.
to me the song's about deception. things are never as they appear. we are always being fooled, tricked.
do you think you can tell a smile from a veil?
also it conveys the feeling that there really is little difference between seemingly polar opposites (heaven and hell). Makes no difference in the end. There's a sad hopelessness about it...
and yet I love this song so much!

Given when the song was written and some of the lyrics...
"did they get you to trade your walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage"
I always believed some or part of the song was about MIAs and POWs during Viet Nam.
I think it is a song about missing a friend.

I thought it was for one of their members that literally went insane from drug use.
