First of all, don't pay him! I haven't heard of Belkin routers/modems causing broadband to not work based purely on the ISP you have. Fair enough, BT aren't the best but things that are designed to work on broadband, tend to work on broadband.

So long as you have the username and password from your ISP, and can log into the router (usually opening a browser and entering 192.168.0.1 or something similar) you can setup the router manually. Basic settings to look out for are:

Multiplexing Method - VC Based
VPI - 0
VCI - 38
Encapsulation - PPPoA
Username - to include the '@HGxx.btinternet.com'
IP address - Dynamic
DNS - Dynamic

If you post some model details on the kit you have, it may help if you still have problems.

Hope this helps.

be sure to check if it is a dsl or an adsl router, a dsl wont work on bt as it is a cable router for bt it must be an adsl one

This doesn't sound right. I would expect, with the right settings, it would work. I wouldn't pay the £45.
