I am looking to move to Chicago, my roommate is going to go to Columbia College and I am going to be attending UIC. We want to find a 2 br apartment in the area, however I do not know the name of the district I should look for. We originally thought Bucktown or Wicker Park, but have been told that is too far away for what we are looking for. All I would like is the name of some "areas" we should look at. Please do not give me street names, just district names (lincoln park, bronzeville, etc.) Thanks a lot!

hi,
i moved to chicago from TN about two years ago. I went to apartmentpeople.com to find an apartment. there is a map with a name of area and stuff...

anyways, they'll come up with a list of apartments based on your request such as location and budget. They will also go to the apartment with you (they have cars) and show you what it looks like. it's free.

hello there, and Chicago welcomes you with open arms lol. I don't know your financial situation but uic is expensive so keep that in mind when looking for apartments. The areas between/around these schools are a bit pricey so you can afford to be choosey. chicago can be expensive if u don't manage your money correctly. I suggest looking on craigslist.com. thats where i found my apartment and i live in the south shore/hyde park area. this same apartment was listed on rent.com/apartment.com for much more than i am paying; but the thing about craigslist is that many of the listings are by the owners. also u can find many free things on there (no not all the time junk), my bf gave away a van last yr on there.

Well, instead of just telling you an answer (which I don't really know, I don't actually live in Chicago, and I don't know much about the area names), I'm going to tell you how to go about searching for an apartment in the area you want. Teach a man to fish, and everything...

So, go to yahoo maps:
http://maps.yahoo.com/

and type in chicago, il.
Then, where it says "Find on the map", type in Columbia College.
It'll give you a list of things, and the first result is the address it gives on the Columbia College website, so I figure that's the right one. Then, drag that location up into the directions area, so you can remember where it is. (You can click the little x next to chicago, il to clear it from the directions section.)Then, search for uic on the map. Zoom into the map so you can see the area where a lot of uic things are. You'll see that it's marked on the map. So, just pick one of the locations that's around there, and drag it up to the directions area. Now, you'll have the two colleges marked. So, now you have a good idea of where you should be looking.

Keep that map page open while you're looking for apartments, so then you can put in the address of one that you think might be good, and you can see where it is in regards to the two colleges.

And if you look at the streets around the two colleges, you can compare it to this site:
http://www.dreamtown.com/services/chicago-neighborhood-map.htm#nearsth

and see what areas might be good. To me, it looks like Loop, West Loop, South Loop, maybe Medical Village and Pilsen.

Rent.com is great, make sure you check it out. You can get $100 if you see the apartment on there, and then when you go look at the apartment, say that rent.com is how you found them (your referral), and then go back to rent.com after you begin your lease.

Make sure when you find an apartment that might be good, to put it into your yahoo maps page with the 2 college locations in it, so you can check out where it is in regards to them. Also don't forget to check out public transportation (bus and train routes) at:
http://www.transitchicago.com/

Good luck with your search!

There's the near west side, within that neighborhood you have University Village, Tri-Taylor, Greek Town, Little Italy and Illinois Medical District.

go to apartmentfinder.com
or
their are people like real estate agents who will find you apartments you are looking for and take you to see them. you don't have to pay them either, they get paid by the apt building owners.

Lakeview, is best, it's close to downtown without being overintrusive.
