i am 16 and want to purchase a mac but am unsure of what model to buy. i use a computer for homework, music and video but not gaming. I do not want to spend too much money as this purchase will mainly be to see if i can use a mac efficiently after using windows for so long

the answer above me is a good computer. but let me also say that if you want a laptop the macbook pro is THE way to go. and now with the Intel core 2 duo's in them, mac can run windows too. they are the only computer with dual OS technology.

I went for the Mac Mini, but made the memory up to 1GB - a minimum for a smooth running mac in my opinion. As for making the transition to Mac OS X from Windows, should be fairly smooth. However, from personal experience, the dock takes a while to understand. As a switcher to the mac, you may initially miss the simplicity of the task bar concept for moving between open application windows.

mac mini's are so-so, over priced for a sff computer with no mouse/keyboard or monitor. with a 160gb HDD and 1gb of ram the cheapest one will be $1000 with a keyboard and mouse, this is insane. they are kind of silly in that they pair a very good processor with low storage capacity HDDs, low ram, and low end graphics.

a 20" iMac(crazy good monitor) with:
2.16ghz core duo
1gb of ram(+$175 for 2gb)
500gb HDD
ATI Radeon x1600/256mb graphics card
and keyboard and mouse(standard stuff)

is $1,774. sounds like a lot, and it is, but it's a mac, and they cost lots of money. this computer would be able to do any thing you need it to including gaming should you decide to later, the 256mb card is not entirely neccisary, but for $75 more it may end up being worth it if you end up putting any more demanding software on the computer.

get the 500gb HDD, you will never, ever run out of space this way, upgrading a hard drive is terrible on these computers as you cannot install two drives.

My suggestion would be one of the Macs already suggested with at least 1 GB RAM and a Super Drive for burning DVDs.

Get a mac mini. It will do all you want and you can get a startup one for $599. It will work with any monitor you already have. Just make sure you get at least 1GB of memory.
I would go for the $799 mini as it has a dual layer DVD burner in it. Also get it with at least 1GB memory.
