That depends on the size of the ding, and whether the bumper is steel, aluminum, or plastic. Most plastic bumpers will have to be replaced outright because the Styrofoam structure behind them gets damaged. If it has a hole in it, then it will definitely need replacing. Aluminum or steel bumpers can be straightened, and either polished, painted or chromed.

Well if you go to a repair shop other then the factory repair shop if its not a Major ding they should be able to use a heat gun to get the bumper back to the original shape if its plastic or to pound then buff out the ding if its metal so not to high but the factory will want to replace it which can get costly like 300 or 400 bucks where i would think it would only be around 100 to fix it some place else but just call local repair places some times the ones that are the least flashy are the most understanding and will do what they can to help you for as little money as possible

It depends on the car.

For example, I own an old 71 VW beetle. I can REPLACE the entire rear bumper for $30 (new and shiny)

If I owned a new Caddy SUV, I can figure that $30 might pay for one on the bolts that holds it on to the car.

There are various options that also make the cost vary.

1) To use a new bumper or to obtain a re-chromed one
2) To find a USED bumper at a wreckers (auto recycler)

Check eBay in the completed auctions and you might find a good replacement that will give you the idea of what the cost might be for your specific car.
