Buy a linksys network switch and you will have a small network with a single collision domain. You are not specific in your question as to what you require of your small network. If you wanted to go even more minimally - buy a cross over cable and run it between two hosts. Now you have the smallest possible network!

if your running windows xp, simply go into network settings and click the create a home network, and it will run a setup wizard that will take you through step by step. if you want a wireless network, you will have to buy a wireless router. i suggest linksys because they are really easy to set up. you just plug it in and turn it on, and it comes with step by step directions on how and where to plug it in.
