people often ask "are you married",,according to you,other than whether you are married or not,
what do the people actually mean to know when they ask you that question

It could be small talk. Someone just trying to fill a pregnant silence with idle chit-chat. Are you married, any children, how old are they, what is your wife's name? Something like that.
It could be an attempt to explain a particular idiosyncrasy, real or imagined, noted by the inquisitor. I've never seen a guy do that before, are you married?
It could be an inquiry to determine your availability in the dating market. Hey good looking, do you have a wife at home?
There may be others but I can't think of any more at the moment.

it depends on who is asking the question to figure out the reason. mostly its to make an assumption or pass a judgement.
either that or they want to know if you're available
or they're just plain curious. "is a person like you married? do you have a family?". cos people kinda want to know those things. its like "so what do you do for a living?"

That question is just an overlay to "Are you available?" in most cases but some people just ask out of curiosity. The reasons differ from one person to another.

its very normal question when people meets 1st time they asks so many questions like that : r u married ?who is in ur family ?do u have girl friend ?wt do u study ?what r ur hobbies? this is just 4 introduction they simply want 2 know about u ..may be they want friendship wd u ..

they ask this question so that they can pass judgement on a person. are you married? well why are you acting like that? are you married? well you wanna go out sometime ..

People ask because they are either going to ask why are you doing something or ask to hook up with you.
