Because marijuana is part of the US war on drugs program
and this program supports a LOT of city, state and
federal employees...
If you legalized marijuana, these bureaucrats and public employees would lose a lot of money and some might actually have to go
out and find real jobs...

It is a matter of timing, if the tobacco and alcohol were introduced now they would probably be declared illegal. But alcohol is much easier to produce at home, than the others so it would be impossible to enforce, as the "prohibition" proved. Tobacco is becoming more illegal to smoke in many public places.

Canada has a small government marijuana plant for medical use.

At one time alcohol was not legal (prohibition)...the more junk you allow as legal, the more society will be open to toleration of other crud and ask that it be legalized as well. Once you permit a society of people to become more and more dependent on brain altering substances, you lose the ability to keep the society in line and the result is chaos.

we talked about this in one of my classes...

my prof. mentioned that tobacco and caffeine and alcohol were all brought over by the english when they came to america...all of the illegal drugs (like marijuana) is not native to america or to england, so that's why it's not legal (yet).

Tobacco and alcohol are long standing, well established, traditional, accepted and well-regulated-and taxed "vices"...marijuana is "newer" and has a "drug" reputation and association that is much more difficult for our society to accept....not logical but...that's the way it is!
