I heard of TiVos and DVRs but I'm not sure, are they expensive? I'd also try tape recording but I don't have one of those anymore. Is there any other way for me to record TV shows while I'm away? For example, if I have to be somewhere at 12, I'd want to set the recorder (whatever it may be) so it can record it automatically while I'm away and then stop when whatever I'm recording is over (just for an hour for example.)

Are there any other ways to record TV shows by myself while I'm away? Possibly cheaper ways?

I'm a huge fan of TiVo... the cheapest machine is free with $10-20/ month for your plan depending on the length of the plan and whether or not you pre pay. If you upgrade to $70 for a machine you can get one that records two tv shows at once. and who hasn't had two favorite shows playing at the same time?!?!

TIVo isn't all that expensive. If you look at the TIVo page on the internet you will see that they even have a free machine, you just pay for the service, and the cost of that depends on how you pay. They are the easiest way to make sure you get the programs that you want as you can pre-program up to 2 weeks ahead and just go.
If you want really cheap you can still go out and buy a video deck, they are still made and cost about $70 or less. Then of course you have to program when you are on your way out. Or you can buy a DVD recorder which are no longer that expensive, but as with a video player you have to set it before you go out.
It's really a matter of how much do you record, are they things you want to keep, what kind of quality do you want.

I think most stores still have VCRs for under $100 that you can buy to tape shows.

Also some DVD recorders have fallen in price as well - I know from time to time Best Buy had them for under $100.

If $50-$300 AND $15-$40+ per month are expensive, then yes.

MythTV is an opensource alternative.

Apple's iTunes sells TV shows, and some shows are available from torrent sites (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mininova)

Good luck.
