...like spit in it, drop it on the floor, etc. I am so paranoid after stories I've heard that I will never send anything back. Any chefs/ cooks out there that have actually done this???

I don't think it had to do with a cheap or an expensive place, it has to do with the integrity of the people making you're food. I've been in the food industry for 9 years, and I've never seen that happen. It's their job to make sure you're food comes out correctly. And if it does happen, well then karma is a *****

i was a cook at a pizzeria (and now waiter at the cheesecake factory) and we never spit in anyones food or anything like that, even if they sent it back. while a chef/cook may resent it. the fact is most are professional about it and just redo the order, not always happily though. but after all, it is the customers right to have way they ordered. if chef/waiter/cook is a real jerk i guess it might happen but i don't think so. im sure there are some restaurants where it happens (the culture of the restaurant encourages it) but these places are far and few between and probably don't serve good food anyways.

next time be dont worry just send it back!!! you wont be eating something thats been tampered with, i promise.

I have worked in many restuarants over the past 10 years. I will tell you that the likelihood of something gross happening to your food is very small. In most restuarants managers, servers, and chefs have too much dignity and respect to be petty and mess with your food. Especially if a mistake is made on the cook's behalf (you asked for no onions and they put onions in it anyway) then they don't mind remaking your food or heating it up.

I cannot promise you that nobody will ever mess with you food because I have no idea where you like to dine out. You have to use your best judgement. Something like having food dropped on the floor and then served to you anyway is probably (and maybe surprising to hear) more likely to happen someplace like red lobster than mcdonalds. Places like mcdonalds have too many managers monitoring the cooks for anyone to get away with that, and their food is so inexpensive that they can easily replace it. If you go to a restaurant and order a steak that accidentally gets dropped on the floor, the chances of it going back on the grill before it hits your plate are higher at a chain restaurant than someplace upscale.

While there is some truth behind the rumors, try not to let movies like Waiting scare you. It's far less frequent than you would expect. Additionally, sending food back isn't going to increase your chances much of having something happen to your food. If a place is dirty enough that they would do something to your food if you sent it back, chances are that they're not hygenic to begin with, and you may have been at risk before you got your food in the first place.

I've seen chefs get ticked off, but I've never done it myself. The worst is when something's underdone and sent back (even though it was cooked to their asking), I'd nuke it or just plop it in au jus for a while.

I always had an eye on my assistant cooks. If they did something to a food, they must have been under my radar. There still are some of us good cooks out there.

I do send back if it's not the way I ordered it. I'm never rude but explain the reason I can't eat it the way it's served. I seem to say Sorry alot. Deep down I'm hoping that the chef is respectable and takes pride in his cooking. My fingers are crossed that he hasn't "spit" into it. I find if I approach it nicely they seem to appreciated and don't have a problem with it. . (fingers crossed LOL We truly can't say for sure can we

I refuse to eat anything that tastes "funny" like, had been previously thawed and refrozen. Or is rotten. And, if I ordered a steak done to medium and then, it bleeds red when I cut it, I ask them to put it back on the grill for a few more minutes.

No one has ever made me think they might do something nasty to the food because of this. They're always happy to make it right. If I'm paying for good food, then I should have good food.

I would have left, lol. I don't like adjustments. I'm so picky with what I eat..and have absolute no patience to keep sending my food back over and over. the most I would take would be 2 times and then I would have gotten myself a free dinner:)

I was a cook at a nice restaurant and when someone brought back their food , I would never do anything to it. If you did you could find a law suit @ hand and lose your job. So, I would say if you eat @ a nice sit down place you shouldn't have a problem but if you go to a fast food restaurant you might.

That's a big fear of mine so I just DON"T do it. Doesn't matter how nice you are to the waiter. The waiter and the cook might not get along or the waiter may lie to the cook. Who knows. It's scary enough having a stranger make your food, but then to tell them they did it wrong. NO THANK YOU! If i don't like it I'll smooch off my hubby's food.

I think alot of it depends on where you are eating at. If it's at McDonald's or a lower-end resturant like that, then there is a pretty good chance. If it is a sit-down resturant and the manager is involved, then probably not.

What aggravates me most is when you send back cold food and they microwave it. I can have TV dinners at home.
