All the news reporters are out interviewing icicles and pointing out other cold spots. Bridges and overpasses have been closed just in case they might ice over! My apartment complex sanded the stairs..... there was no ice on them. It's mass hysteria. Schools are closed. I drove 30 miles in to work today and didn't see a single ice crystal the whole time. Weird.

Why do some northern cities freak out when the temperature gets to 100 degrees?

It is a difference of where you are living. The people in Houston do not drive on ice too often. They do not have the experience to know how to handle it. The same can be said for a heat wave in the north. Most people in the north do not know how to handle it. Many do not have the A/C to keep the house cool.

That stuff used to happen in Seattle ALL the time. It's like even though they know what snow and ice are up there, everyone decides to freak out because they've got nothing better to talk about. It's the same thing here in Florida; so many people freak when hurricanes are on their way that they forget that we all know how to get through them, for the most part.

People in south Texas aren't used to any ice or really cold weather. They don't have the equipment to deal with icy roads that areas who frequently get ice have available. This is a once in a lifetime experience for most south Texans-only those who moved there from northern regions where they dealt with ice on a yearly basis have any idea what to do.

Because they don't often get this type of weather in that part of Texas. People there aren't accustomed to driving with ice on the road so the chances of there being accidents are much greater.

A couple of seasons ago it got cold enough in an area north of San Francisco, CA that it snowed. It doesn't usually snow there. About four people, I think, were killed in a car crash because they weren't used to the snow.

We get the same type of $hit in the LA area. Approx 10 mins of an hour newscast is dedicated to what little ice and snow is around. Meanwhile, people are getting shot on the freeway and gunned down by gangs, and that gets less coverage.

yeah, it's really rediculous, but you have to take into consideration how rarely it gets this cold here. it's snowed here like twice in my lifetime, so naturally those who don't travel much and haven't experienced a REAL winter are freaking out about it. as for the bridges and overpasses, that's just the city trying to cover their own @sses.

Everyone that I know from TX says they will not move north cause they hate the cold. That's why they are freaking. I am having fun bragging about our weekend in the mid 70s here in the north.

I think they are just not used to it being WINTER during the WINTER. LOL

People from that area do not know how to drive in weather like that. (I am one of those people...hehe) The accident risk increases because people will continue to drive like lunatics and put other people's lives at risk. I have to admit i am one of those that never wants to move any farther north bc i hate, hate, hate ice and snow and am terrified to drive in it... no shame here...
