We once hosted a party of 16 people at a restaurant. My MIL gave the waitress a really hard time. Ordered a meal that the waitress TOLD her would have to be defrosted first so it would take a long time. It was cheaper and her son was paying, so Mom ordered it anyway.

Then Mom got angry, demanded her food because it was so long in coming. Lied, and told the waitress that she was diabetic and had to eat on time. Dinged against her cup with her knife to get everyone's attention, and get her food faster.

When we left the restaurant, Mom saw my hubby leave a tip (20% of the total bill for all those folks). She picked it up off the table and put it in her purse. I saw her do this, so I put another tip down from my own money.

When we got home, she gave my hubby the tip money back, and said to him, "Here is the money you forgot at the restaurant." I held out my hand, and said "I put another tip out there. You can give that to me."

See why I wasnt good enough for her son?

Wow! Stories like this sure do make me appreciate my MIL--I'm gonna give her a call tonite.
Anyway, you cannot get anywhere without your hubby's support. He has got to have your back so when you decline to eat out with that looney he supports you!
You may be his wife but to her he will always be her little boy and you'll never be good enough.
Take the high road and treat her with respect but decline social events unless it's the holidays.
Oh, and xanax helps too!!
Good luck!

Wow, you have a mil just like I used to have. What I did was keep cash in my pocket, and I'd be the last to leave the restaurant. I'd slip the waitress the tip and apologize for the mil's rudeness and that's just how she is. The server was always so thankful that it wasn't their fault and appreciated it. I never told her I did this. I'd make an excuse to go to the restroom and then meet them at the car.

I've been a server, and it's happened to me. I know what it feels like to think you've been stiffed.

WOW. That seriously is the last time i would dine out with these people for a very long time. That kind of behavior is unacceptable and embarASSing. I would have apologized to the waitress and tiped extra. If you HAVE to go out with these people again, I would embarass the MIL. Before she even orders, I would state loud and clear to the waitress in front of the table, "My MIL is very difficult and I apologize in advance for any trouble."
