We listen to sad songs, watch sad movies especially when we are already in pain. They make us cry but we come back for more. Is there something good we find in pain?

Yes, I think when we are sad, we find comfort in sad movies and songs. They express feelings that we can relate to while we are going through that sadness. There is nothing worse than being FORCED to cheer up when we are sad.

Sadness is normal and is all a part of the human experience. Constant HAPPINESS would get quite dull after a while, and if we were in this state constantly, we would cease to know or appreciate it. Occasional sadness is gives us a yardstick with which to measure and is necessary to fully recognize and appreciate the happy times. ☺

Ask B.B. King. Oh, yeah, we need the blues. Gotta go down to spring back up, life would really be bland if the sun shined on a 70 degree world everyday. How can you know real joy unless you have had real pain? And without one, there not be the other.
Think of this as two sides to the same coin.
If you got the blues, at least you gots da coins.

I have always had issues with depression but learned it was ok to feel it. I can let my blues take over and be irrational for a while. When I am done, I switch back to letting the intellect take control again. I like to feel pain as well as joy. Any emotion has a purpose and if you know how to use them, you can do interesting things.

The reason most people keep going back to depressing songs while depressed themselves is because they, (the songs), are even more depressing than the person listening to it.
Consciously, it may not make that big of a difference but, subconsciously, it makes us feel better to know that there is someone else that feels worse than we do, and that makes us, (if only a little), feel better about our particular situation.

When I was going through my divorce I bet I watched every 'lov em and leave em" movie out there.
Why? Probably because there was always a sense of hope that the ending would be a happy one, which is of course, what I wanted to happen to me as well.

To watch or listen to sob stories makes us aware that our own life isn't really all that bad.
