I am horrible at history and i can never remember the differences of these two parties. Why did they form? What was their political impact? Were they successful?

Populists live in the limelight of the moment. They have no need to change the status quo, because it favors them. Progressives, on the other hand, are constantly moving forward by looking for innovative ideas that will "progress" the nation forward. Basically, for a progressive, today is yesterday, so we must be looking toward tomorrow.
