Hi. You can do a simple text file with Notepad, available from your Start> All programs> Accessories>. Or use Wordpad. If you have Office XP use Microsoft Word.

You can start by using WORDPAD

This is a good simple word processor and you get it free as part of Windows XP

If you want to spent a few hundred $ you can buy Microsoft Office which include Words - a more sophisticated word processor

Look for Microsoft Word or Microsoft Work Word Processor. If neither is there then download Open Office.

The way I do it is by using Microsoft Works when my old man got his computer used the disks came with it so thats how i do it. But you should be able to use wordpad and customize it. Hope that helps.
