Sharla, if you really wanna get the perfect tool set for your husband, heres what you do, you ask him. A man appreciates the right gift more than the surprise, especially if he's an alpha male who likes his tools anyway, he's probably likely to have what he wants already. The last thing a man wants are duplicates of the same tools making it hard to keep them organized.
If you absolutely have to keep it a surprise, heres the plan to the perfect toolset.
1.) Find out what project he's gonna be working on, rebuilding an engine, building a garage, building a bar in the basement etc.

2.) Take some photo's of the tools he has to the Home Depot/Lowes/Auto Zone etc.

3.) Let them know what he's doing, and what your price range is. You get what you pay for in tools more than anything, a cheap hammer will break, a cheap drill will burn up with heavy use. Let them know how much he does projects like this. Keep the receipt.

4.) Even better than buying all those tools and bringing it to him, you might wanna do this, and this still counts as sweet. Have the people at the store help pick out everything he'd want. Then have them put it on an estimate. Then buy a gift card for that estimate amount, including sales tax. Then present that to him.
That gives you the "I'm such a sweet thoughtful hardworking gift buyer" along with the fact that he's really gonna get a set of tools that he wants and needs.

I've worked at Home Depot, Menards, and Lowes, and have been remodeling homes for 10 years. I know my tools, and I know what men and women want when they shop for tools.

Well, most people here are saying Craftsman, which, of course, is sold exclusively at SEARS. They also have some great prices on their sets. What exactly you want to get, of course, depends on a) what he already has, and b) what he wants to use them for. If he doesn't have many tools Sears has some great sets for pretty cheap (compared to buying each tool separately).

For wrenches, sockets, etc. Snap-On tools are one of the best brands available, and are indeed considered to be better tools than Craftsman, but if your husband isn't planning on using them for hours a day 4-5 days a week, the cost probably isn't worth the price difference. They both have lifetime warranties, and they both get the job done.

You know better than I do what your husband has/doesn't have and also what he wants the tools for. My recommendation is to get a nice set of Craftsman tools that you think he will like, and then wrap them up for his b-day. Keep the receipt, and tell him that he can go back to Sears and make sure the set you got him is what he wants. That way, if you really missed the mark, no big deal, and it still is better (at least in my opinion) than just giving him a gift card to wrap, although that might be a good way to go, too.

One last suggestion, when you go to Sears, talk to someone there about what you are looking for. I find the people at Sears to usually be very knowledgeable and very helpful.

Take a look at what tools he already has. There's a good chance that if you get a set for him, he will already have half of it. So write down what he has already and you'll be better able to get him what he doesn't have. Here are some basic tools for working on cars:
WRENCHES:
open end / box end/ short / stubby/ ratcheting (real nice)
SCREWDRIVERS: w/ a 'hex-assist thingy' at the handle (so you can use a wrench to add more torque to your twist).
Don't forget torx (star) drivers
pry bars (yes, you do need more than one)
ratchets: 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" drive (That's the measurement of the square that fits the sockets.), also come in stubby, long-and flex- handle (flex-handle ratchets are nice). There's also a relatively new "ratchet" without a handle. It's just like a little grip to twist your sockets.
Sockets: deep-well, shallow-well, wrist sockets (sockets with a universal joint attached)
--standards: 1-4", 3/8", 1/2" drive sets covering somewhere's around 3/16" to 1 1/2" hex
--metrics: 3mm-oh at least up to 32mm
Oh, wrench racks are nice if you have a roll-around toolbox (also nice)
nut drivers: like screwdrivers, but like a socket on the end.
These also need the hex-thingy wrench assist hex thing by the handle.
hammers, speed jack, 4' steel pipe (persuader)
other things: low-profile creeper w/ big wheels, air compressor, impact wench (noobs call them "air -guns"), air ratchet, impact sockets (black), above-ground H-lift, lube-well, scope, cherry picker, brass pole.
Remember that you need tools in both metric and standards.
Craftsman (Sears) is a good brand, and probably the only decent brand that is accessible if you don't work in a shop. Also, it's the only decent brand if you don't work in a shop because you can't just go to Sears to turn in a Snap-On tool you broke. You have to wait till the Snap-On guy comes to your shop... but ... nm that...just go with Craftsman. Also, don't go to a Sears in a podunk area. Go to a Sears in an upscale area, it will have a better selection.

You can probably find a tool kit that doesn't overlap the tools he already has too badly.

First ask yourself what does he want tools for? Capentry, fixing up the house, fixing the car, etc. there are different types and sets of tools for different jobs.

Two does your husband now work with tools? at work, allot, occasional, rarely.

If you live in the US you may want a SAE set unless you are working on an Asian or European made car then you will want a metric set. Also how much do you want to spend. A good tool set can be very expensive.

I work at an automotive shop and have some knowledge about automotive tools. I have used a number of brands and have bought a number of tools sets.

I suggest going to Sears and talking to the tool sales people. Were I working on a car I would need a set of tools that included a set of screw drivers, a 1/4" rachet set, 3/8" rachet set, and a 1/2" rachet set, a set of wrenches from 8mm to 19mm. A allen key set, torx key set, hammer, pliers, slip joint pliers, needle nose pliers, electrical pliers. wire strippers. Something that I think that would add the certain touch would be (if this tool set is for car/motorcycle repair) would be to get a chilton/mitchel/alldata subscription/repair manual with the tools set.
hope this helped a bit.

You can always count on Craftsmen for hand tools. Especially for someone who likes to work with wood. Carftsman sells tools individually, so you can choose only the ones you want, or in sets, with the most commonly used tools grouped together. Thats always a good starting point....My husband is always thrilled with the tools I buy for him...especially as Craftsman handtools, ie screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, are replacabale! You just bring the worn out/damaged ones to Sears and switch them out for new ones, no cost to you!
If its power tools you want, you can look into Makita, they seem to be good. Also Bosch and DeWalt...all good brands.
I don't know much at all about tools for mechanics, if thats what he wants.
Hope this helps! I've included a website for Craftsman tools, so you can take a look and get an idea of the prices, etc....

Dependiing on how much money you want to spend, Home Depot has open end wrenches with a hex ratchet on the other end. The set costs about $50 but is guaranteed for life. It comes in either metric or SAE sizes. They are wonderful. Also, a set of different long nose pliers are always good. If he's into small things, an eye loupe is essential as are jewler's screwdrivers. For bigger 'car' stuff a new hydraulic jack is good if he does his own maintance. Snap On is the best and most expensice tool company. Be sure the tool is guraanteed for life.

That depends in what your husband does the most. If your husband makes mechanic repairs, look for a tool set with a good variety of open wrenches, sockets and the three ratchet sizes. If he is more of a wood worker, maybe a cordless power tool set would be more desirable (although more expensive). If he is more of a handyman, then a toolset with many different types of tools, hex wrenches, screw drivers with many different types of bits, etc.

I must agree with the stanley tools worker, even though craftsman is a great tool it is way overpriced. Other tools as visegrip, stanley, husky are very good. Do not buy generic toolsets from pepboys or something like that, they get rust very fast. I bought a very good visegrip set at costco for about $70.

I will go ahead and let you know that you get what you pay for when it comes to tools. If he uses tools alot and you have the money to spend buy name brand tools like DeWalt, Milwalkee, or Porter Cable. I perfer DeWalt because they are a great quality tool and they have about anything you need all in this one brand name. If he doesn't use tools alot then you can go with a cheaper name brand like craftman, skil, or ryobi, etc. Just select a type of tool that is cordless because he can use them anywhere even if he doesn't have a plug in. I would still think that he would need at least a 12volt but they do come up an 18volt in the DeWalt brand. If you shop around you can find value packs at home stores like Lowe's or Home Depot where you get a couple different tools with a charger and sometime an extra battery. If you have any more questions please email me.
