describe how you would perform the experiment

Here's the experiment:

Go to the cheap toy store and look for Woolly Willy

It's a mans face and a bunch of iron filings and a magnetic wand.

Move the wand around to make the filings into a beard and moustache or a goatee or devil horns or whatever turns you on.

Once you're done playing, spread out the filings in a smooth layer

Lay a bar magnet over the plastic (or below the cardboard).

The magnetic field lines induce the filings into becoming little magnets themselves, thereby causing them to line up along the field lines.

Put the Iron Filings on a flat bit of paper. Put the magnet under the paper.Move the magnet as you like. The iron filings will also move with the magnet. You can make many designs by doing this experiment.

Move the magnet.
You see the field.
Easy when you know how.

Have hours of fun.

The best way is to have two magnets of opposite polarity some distance apart. This will really highlight the magnetic field lines.

Then just dump the iron filings on the paper, and shake carefully above the magnets.

Put the magnet under a piece of paper and sprinkle the filings on top of the paper. You will see the field.
