Chief Election Commissioner of India

Mr. B. B. Tandon was appointed as Chief Election Commissioner of India by the President with effect from 16th May, 2005. The office of the Chief Election Commissioner carries the status of the Judge of the Supreme Court of India. The appointment to the office of the Chief Election Commission is for a term of 6 years or till the incumbent attains the age of 65 years whichever is earlier.
Prior to this appointment, Mr. Tandon was holding the office of the Election Commissioner of India w.e.f. 13th June 2001 to 15th May, 2005 in addition to this Mr. Tandon was also appointed a Member of the Delimitation Commission by the Government of India on 12th July, 2002. The Commission has been set-up for delimitating the constituencies for election of Members to the House of People and to the Legislative Assemblies of the States. Mr. Tandon remained Member of the Delimitation Commission from 12th July, 2002 to 15th May, 2005.

N. Gopalaswami is the present Chief Election Commissioner of India since he took over charge from B.B. Tandon on June 29, 2006. The other two election commissioners are Navin Chawla and S.Y. Quereshi.
