Page is the connection: the proto-name for Zep was The New Yardbirds til Keith Moon decided they'd "go down like a lead balloon". JP Jones was a long-time session player, whilst Robert Page and Bonzo were part-timers up in the West Mids (1st choice vocalist Terry Reid, tied up with a contract, suggested Page)
In terms of music, Zeppelin went well beyond the blues/r+b confines of any incarnation of the Yardbirds (great tho' they were!) as well as refining the art of showmanship to a level unrivalled by few other live acts ever.

first, they are NOT the same band. the Yardbirds have the distinction of having 3 of the greatest guitarists ever as members: Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck. That said, if they were better than Led Zep, there would not have even been Led Zep. Zepplin rules.

As far as pure musical talent, I have to say the Yardbirds. Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton. My God, what an awesome line-up.
