I have a 5 month old and my pediatritian says he has silent reflux. He does not spit up but he only eats 1,2 maybe 3 oz per feeding totalling 15 to 20 oz a day.We are taking one step at a time but i am very impatient when it comes to the health of my child and want things to work asap.He is allergic to dairy and soy so he is on Nutramegin. He has also had 2 heart surgerys due to a heart defect, they dont think his eating habits now have anything to do with his allergys or his heart.Any input would be great, people with rude things to say keep it to your self please,i am under enough stress.thank you.

Zantac is very normal to give babys for acid reflux, alot of babys have it and the doctors would not give it to babys if they thought after 7 to 10 years of schooling it would not work.

We are also on Zantac for silent reflux and it started working right away. She stopped arching her back and crying while eating, but it did not improve the eating habits. Some babies are not big eaters and babies that are fed often don’t eat as much as a baby that eats every 4-6 hours. I know that you are worried that he is not eating enough. Try talking to your ped about introducing some solids. You can also try feeding him when he is half asleep or smiles in his sleep which gives you a perfect opportunity to snick in a bottle. We manage to get 3oz this way sometimes, just make sure that he is not totally asleep and will swallow the milk instead of just sucking on the bottle, shake his leg if you need to.

Lots of babies have some form of reflux and by age 1 outgrow it. If you don’t see a change in your baby after a few day’s on Zantac maybe he does not have reflux. How did your doctor figure out that he had it? If they just guessed they could be wrong. There is a test they can do to make sure that it is reflux. Ask your ped to administer a test.
Good luck.

Acid reflux silent or not is very common in babies especially in preemies that have pyloric sphincters (cardiac sphincters) that are not fully developed. Zantac is also a very common medication given to babies with reflux. My daughter was put on it and took about 24 hours to work. I saw a big difference in her the next day. She was like a new baby. For the person that said it is not common in babies and has never of Zantac being given to babies, look up GERD and do some research on it then give us your opinion.

wow.. ur son sounds just like mine! he has acid reflux and is allergic to milk and soy also. he took zantac for about 5 months before i saw a vast improvement. he vomited for about 2 months but had lots of pains / problems during feeding. he also only ate about 2-3 oz at a time and totalled to about 20-25 oz per day. now is is 14 months old and still only drinks 3-4 oz per feeding. he is only 18lbs. but let me tell u very healthy and vibrant! i totally know what you are going through as i have been there. how are things with his heart now? i wouldnt worry too much about your son, he sounds to be jsut like mine. he has a flair up of the refluz every now and again but its not as bad as he was at birth. i hope this helped a little. at least you know someone else was in your situation. i really want to speak further about this to you. please email me when you get a chance at queen_bling22@hotmail.com

I have never heard of a baby having silent reflux. And I have never heard of any baby being put on Zantac or any other acid reflux medication. I think it's in the best interest of your baby that you get a second opinion. The medicine might do more harm to your baby than good. Be patient first and foremost. This is your child and you as a parent should only want the best for him.

I saw difference almost immediately. The same day my son (3 weeks old at the time) stopped screaming and was spitting up a lot less. I mean, all babies are suppsed to spit up, as long as it doesn't bother them. Don't expect your baby to stop spitting altogether, but you should see the difference pretty soon.
