to put on my letter? or can i just make sure i have the right amount for airmail and it will automatically send it? i have to send a letter to italy but don't won't ground mail because it will take 4-7 weeks to get there, help!?

you can take it to the window--or calculate the postage by weight on the usps website.
if it's just a plain letter--you can put the correct postage on and give it to your mailman.
anything other than a business or card envelope has to go to the post office window--there is a customs form you need to fill out for it .
