x-rays can harm epiphysial growth plate, which is the layer between bone and cartilage. however, there's no need to be very scared of x-rays. most of the radiation emanating out of x-rays is low and incapable of doing much harm. the x-rays which do most damage are barium enema, intra-venous pyelography, barium swallow, etc. these x-rays are abdominal x-rays with prolonged exposure with dye use. the ordinary single shot x-rays are pretty safe, when needed. the key word is 'when needed'. as one person has said above these x-rays can be used in case of twins to determine their lie (positions).

I know why..X-rays involve anything from the smallest investigation-X-ray in the industry (e.g. screws, planes and other particles), art (authenticity check of old paintings), up to humans and animals. While X-rays are harmless to materials, it can be dangerous to humans and animals. After the discovery of the x-ray (8.11.1895) a long time has passed without anybody noticed that radiation can be harmful. The first couple of devices were not properly configured, so that an unnecessary amount of X-rays was released. The X-ray weakens our immunity system because of its radioactive rays, . However, with today's safety devices, we can hardly feel it. The new models are properly aligned, so they produce a minimum radiation, and still they produce a perfect picture. Nevertheless, the radiologist has to leave the room while taking X-rays. However, only 2% of our daily intake of radioactive rays are from medicine. This includes as well x-ray therapies for curing tumors and cancer.
X-ray treatement should not be performed on pregnant women, it should be postponed, if possible, until 8 weeks after the birth. Alternatively nonionizing radiation should be used. If the the X-ray treatement must be done, the dose to the fetus can be minimized with lead shielding. Even if the dose to the fetus is mederately high, the risk of radiation exposure is still smaller than the rate of occurring birth defects, mutations and cancer. A medical physicist can be consulted to estimate the exposure received by the fetus.
Result: We surely must not have any fear.

I was in a car accident at about the same stage of pregnancy and that was over 32 years ago ... I too had to have exray of my neck and upper back (whiplash) and when I 'settled' with the insurance company (I got medical bills paid plus some 'ouch' money) there was a 'rider' on it ... they were not 'free and clear' until that child had produced children, because the 'radiation' from x-rays does mainly reproductive harm in fetuses. The child was born a 9 on and Apgar scale from 1-10, and he is now the father of two 10s (both girls) and that insurance company is 'off the hook.' If the lead apron was used, your fetus should be FINE ... your worry can probably do far more damage than the x-rays might have done. RELAX and don't 'worry' about it UNTIL you are setting with any insurance company ... then, just for your own sake COVER EVERYTHING (including you having healthy GRANDchildren) but after that, leave it alone until/unless something truly bad happens. And congratulations ... you are on your way to becoming a new person, MOM!

Giving a woman an x-ray while pregnant can harm the baby because x-rays give off harmful radiation which will nt affect you but it will affect the baby.

Any time you get an X-ray, you are exposing your cells to radiation. Usually it does them no harm, but sometimes it starts a cancer in them. It also may change them so that they develop differently. This isn't a huge problem with an adult, and is worth it to find out whatever it is that the X-ray is looking for. But in a foetus, the cells haven't finished developing, so if one of them goes bad due to the X-ray, it will then go on to reproduce and perhaps a whole lung or arm or even brain will be bad.

My friend was pregnant but did not tell the x-ray tech that she was and it caused her to miscarry.
That is what it can do and if it doesn't cause miscarriaget then the rays of that could harm the baby in some way.

Like everyone said, the radiation is bad for a developing baby. But in the later months its ok. Heck, I had an x-ray while in labor cuz an ultrasound couldn't show both babies very well.

Because the radiation used could possibly harm the unborn baby.by causing defects plus its a way of covering their back as a doctor.
