My boyfriend and I went to the mall yesterday, and we stopped in J.C. Penny. We decided to check out the engagement rings there, and the salesman was showing us a slew of rings, then he told us about a type of "Gem" called Moisannite. He said that it's lab created, and it looks, and tests just like a diamond. On the hardness test it's one step below the diamond and the only way to tell that it's actually moissanite is by a "Moissanite test". Was he just full of it, or is it actually worth the purchase? He said that you really can't tell the difference between a diamond and Moisannite by looks alone, although it was very beautiful all rings look beautiful when your in the jewelry store. The moisannite ring he showed me looked yellow. I'm just wondering if this salesman was trying to make a sale, or whether it's really worth the purchase.

Moissanite is a lab creadted stone ( was originally found in a meteorite) that actually has 2x the brilliane and fire of diamonds. If the Moissanite you looked at was yellow, it might just be poor quality. The "moissanite test" it putting under a microscope with a light to look for refractions. Moissanite should look like White D Flawless diamonds. It ( in my opinion) is more bang for your buck and I would be less upset about losing my moissanite neckalce that I would be about losing my diamond earrings. Give it a try.

From what I know, Moissanite looks a lot like the real thing, partciulalrly when compared to something like cubic zarconia. It supposedly has a lot of similiar characteristics to diamonds, and is supposed to appear the same to the untrained eye. I've seen several of them, and I think they look pretty close. I'm no professional jeweler though! The plus side is that you get a great looking ring for a price that doesn't break your bank. And with all of that money you save you could even afford a larger stone. It's all about preference. If you're not that concerned with the status that comes with a genuine diamond, moisannite would be a great option!

Depends on whether you like moissanite or not. The salesman is right in what he's telling you. Moissanite do have a fire and sparkle brighter than some diamonds...however having said that, it's still lab-created....so if you're abit snobbish about it, go for the real thing.
