Usually, your maternity hospital files for it, along with other docs, like birth certificate. You should receive it within 6 weeks, and if not, you can always call the Hospital or Social Security Administration to find out if an application has been filed. SSA will most likely tell you to come to their office and see for yourself. If the application has not been filed, it is never too late to do so. In any case, don't worry, your child will get an SSN sooner or later. Good luck!

If he has it will be because you requested one in the hospital with the birth certificate, or else you filed for one with your local SS administration office.

They come in the mail if you did so.

Otherwise you have to call the SS office in your area, or go in and request one or check the status.
