I have picked up a couple of cobalt salt licks for the numerous deer that frequent our back yard. They don't usually come to close to the house and I would like them to. Will the salt licks draw them closer and what is the best way to present the salt to them...should I use a table or large log or just on the ground. What do they prefer???
I am not going to feed them because so many of our neighbours do but no one offers them salt.

Oh yeah...We live in N. Ontario canada where we get a lot of snow.
It is NOT illegal to feed deer here and almost everyone does. Even people in the city do it.

The reason that I want to offer the deer salt is to keep them off of the roads and highways. This time of year the deer hit the roads to lick the road salt used for de-icing. If more of us offered salt licks in a safer environment then pehaps there would be less deer hit and less human injury.

I would think that a large log would do fine.
Caveat emptor: If you get deer accustomed to coming close to your house, you can pretty much give up on ever having a garden or nice shrubbery. Just know that it's a trade-off...

I would put in a fence, we have deer reach over the fences we have our apple trees encased in, and the deer eat the trees down to the ground. I would get about a 4ft high fence, and wrap it in a square about 20ft around the feeder in a box formation.

Deer have lived on their own instincts for thousands of years...I don't think feeding them is a good idea because it changes their natural instincts and makes them dependent on "man" to survive!
It goes against nature!
If you want to provide salt, take it way out into the woods, salt is one thing most animals have a difficult time finding, but they always seem to find natural salt...in clay or mineral rock deposits!

Put it on a log so they would have to bend down just a little...leave it there for a few days a then move a little closer...maybe 1 to 2 feet at a time every few days or so...Good Luck!

I wouldn't tell anyone you are doing that. I do believe it is illegal. Stupid as it is, I'm pretty sure I heard that. They say your supposed to let nature take it's course. No help from humans. Just plain dumb. Then why does everyone have bird feeders?! Anyways, have fun watching the deer!

In some areas it has become illegal to feed deer for the fear of this disease spreading through the saliva left on uneaten feed. Check it out, then make your decision.
If you want to see the effects, type in CWD on an image search in Yahoo or Google. It ain't pretty!

Set it on the ground away from the house. Be careful this does not cause problems like them eating your shrubs...
