Because he was a great leader- his men followed him faithfully. He was beat once and came back to try again. He also had the respect of those leaders that he fought against.

Because of his prowess in battle. He was excellent at strategy and planning things out. He was a brilliant military leader, and that typically makes one remembered for being a great leader in general, even if one wasn't worth a darn in civil matters. Don't believe me, take a look at other great military leaders such as Alexander the Great & Ghengis Khan.
